This weekend was a block full of free time Saturday since the Hokies had a bye week. So I decided to take a trip out to Giles county and hike Bald Knob. The drive from Blacksburg is around a half hour 19-mile drive through a beautiful mountain with great views of the New River Valley. The hike is only around .7 miles but is at a steep angle. A perfect spot if you want a quick trip with a gorgeous view but won’t take all day. In all it takes about 15-25 minutes to reach the summit. Definitely, pl...

As a young boy, there were many things that caught my eyes that I wanted to have. I always wanted a boat, a nice house, and a nice vehicle to drive around that was built exactly how I wanted it. I always was considered the odd kid out because I was the only one in my class who when we would talk about dream cars, I would bring up a truck. Everyone else would want Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and cars alike. I was the only kid in my class who genuinely wanted a truck.

Through my time searching for a potential career, I have learned that experiences can truly shape your future. One of my first experiences in healthcare was when I worked as a volunteer in the emergency room at a small hospital my junior year of college and learned to admire the incredible field of nursing. Not only did the nurses I worked with have such a high work ethic and intellect, they were also so compassionate and personable with every patient even during a stressful, busy shift. When th...

I was you; I was that kid who thought I had it all and never needed anything from anyone. Growing up watching so many people on tv express their "self-made" success played in my mind like a broken record. What I eventually learned was that not everything we see is what it actually is. We as people tend to believe what we see not what we know and that eventually leads to confusion and in completion. I can't tell you it's impossible to be successful without any help but I can tell you when you ha...

Redshirt junior Ricky Walker learned from others early in his career and now has welcomed being in a leadership role on the defensive line

How did I become a Hokie? It started after my ninth grade year of playing varsity football when former offensive line coach Curt Newsome came to my high school and talked to my athletic director about me. The following day of school, my AD told me that there is a school that really likes you. I asked who, and he told me Virginia Tech. I was just a freshman,...

An in depth look at how football prepares you for more than the challenges you’ll endure on the field.

Football is the most popular game in our country and has been for quite some time now. People every summer sign up across the United Sates for an array of reasons. Maybe to stay in shape, get out of the house, meet new friends, have some fun, etc. All of these are great reasons to play. However, what most people don’t realize when they sign up is the valuable life lessons this game instills into...

Saturday night the Virginia Tech Hokies took on Boston College in a prime time match up under the lights in Chestnut Hill, MA. That night the Hokies defeated BC 23-10 and wide receiver Sean Savoy had a career night. The true freshman wide receiver out of Washington D.C had 9 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown. However shortly after the game Sean received some devastating news. His older brother, Omar, had been killed Sunday morning just a few hours after the game back in D.C. Omar was only...

Tech wide receiver C.J. Carroll arrived as a walk-on, didn't play for two years and gradually worked his way into a prominent role

Four years ago, I was a high school senior finishing up the football season at Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland. I had played football my whole life, but at this point, my future as a football player was in question. I wanted to play at the next level, but no one was willing to take a chance on a 5-foot-7, 150-pound slot receiver. February of 2014 rolled a...

Oscar Bradburn, a native of Australia, celebrates the one-year anniversary of his commitment to Tech and how it has changed his life

Close to a year ago today, I committed to playing football and studying at Virginia Tech. Being from a completely different background in Sydney, Australia, I questioned my ability to go forth and be successful in the environment that my peers had lived in their whole lives. I devoted a year away from my family and friends to work toward something that I had no pre...
